Gulf Build Contracting: biometric attendance across 12 sites in six weeks

A Dubai contractor with 1,400 workers replaced paper registers with face recognition terminals and offline 4G sync from POS Emirates, eliminating buddy punching and cutting monthly payroll preparation from two days to two hours.

The challenge

Gulf Build Contracting manages residential and infrastructure projects across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain with a workforce of roughly 1,400 direct and subcontracted workers. Attendance was recorded on paper registers by site clerks and transported to head office weekly. HR estimated that between five and ten percent of recorded hours were never worked, and disputes over overtime were constant.

Several sites had no fixed internet, and previous attempts with card-based terminals failed because cards were shared or lost. Payroll preparation for WPS took two full days each month and was frequently late.

The solution

POS Emirates deployed rugged ZKTeco SpeedFace face recognition terminals at every site gate, housed in sun shields and connected through 4G routers with UPS backup. Devices store punches locally and synchronise to Time Attendance Software throughout the day, so remote sites report as reliably as city projects.

Workers were enrolled in bulk from HR records during induction sessions, shift templates were configured for standard, night and Ramadan hours, and supervisors approve overtime on a mobile app. Approved hours export monthly to the client's payroll system as WPS-ready files. Asset Management Software was added in a second phase to track generators, compressors and power tools moving between sites.

Results

8.5%
Reduction in paid labour hours from eliminating buddy punching
2 hrs
Monthly payroll preparation, down from two days
12
Sites live within six weeks

Deployment approach

  1. Pilot on two Dubai sites for two weeks to validate device placement and 4G coverage.
  2. Enrolment of 1,400 workers using photos captured at induction.
  3. Rollout to the remaining ten sites in two waves, including Al Ain and Abu Dhabi projects.
  4. Phase two: barcode and RFID tagging of 600 tools and plant items.

Outcomes beyond payroll

  • Live headcount by site helps plan labour camp transport every morning.
  • Midday break compliance reports are produced in seconds during summer inspections.
  • Tool losses between sites fell sharply once issue and return were scanned.
"The system paid for itself in the first month of payroll." — Rajesh Nair, HR Director
